Minnesota’s PlayLand includes the
National Chippewa Forest,
Schoolcraft State Park, and a wealth of public forests managed by the Department of Natural Resources:
Badoura, Battleground,
Bowstring, Crow Wing,
Emily, Foothills,
Golden Anniversary, Hill River,
Land-O' Lakes, Paul Bunyan,
Remer, and Welsh Lake with
Huntersville State Forest just to the west and
Savanna State Forest just to the east. These protected lands are generally open year-round and offer scenic beauty, wildlife habitat, camping, hunting, berry picking, fishing, multi-use trails, and countless recreational opportunities.
Itasca State Park, just west of Minnesota’s PlayLand, is features the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
Schoolcraft State Park, located on its banks in northern Cass County was named for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who is said to be have discovered the “Mighty Mississippi”. Relics of early homesteaders and logging days can be found on the premises as well as evidence of the Indians who camped here long ago. Visitors are encouraged to use the park for environmental education activities and hike the Whisper Interpretive Trail.
